Sustainability at Tech21

At Tech21, we are constantly looking for ways to innovate our processes and products, to reduce or remove our environmental footprint and improve the way we manufacture products for our planet, without sacrificing impact protection for your devices.

So serious are we in fact, that one of our key innovation technologies was the development of our unique bio-spice technology, a material ingredient crafted by our science team to make our cases ‘tastier’ to microorganisms living in landfill environments and break down into the earth.

What makes this bio-spice so innovative is that it doesn’t negate any of the strength and impact protection our cases provide while you’re using them, and it’s only activated by deoxygenated environments, like landfills, where the bio-spice breaks down leaving only organic matter behind. So, there’s no need to worry about the case breaking down in your bag or on your bedside table, because that’s simply not how the science works. We don’t compromise any of the durability and impact protection our cases are famous for, for sustainability and this is a perfect example of that.

Waste Responsible Innovation

We’ve embedded it in selected cases to give our customers complete peace of mind that they are not harming the earth with their plastic case protection – once customers are finished with their Tech21 product, they can simply throw it away in their household bin and once the case is taken to landfill along with the rest of your waste, the case will disintegrate into the soil in a matter of a few years, leaving no trace of harmful microplastics behind.

This biotechnology is simply added to our foundation of advanced impact protection, a feature that underpins our entire product range, proving that sustaining and protecting your tech doesn’t have to literally cost the earth.

How it Works

Our cases break down into organic molecules (Atoms which are bonded together), that appeal to the tiny microorganisms that are essential for all living things.

All these Processes happen simultaneously

Enzymes (chemical substances found in living things) are expelled into the ground.

Elements of the case dissolve into the ground. Some elements dissolve in water.

Some enzymes attach to the surface of the case and divide up. Other enzymes spread across the space surrounding the case.

Our additive ingredient works as a ’special spice’- making the molecules more appetising to microorganisms.

The surface of the ground gradually wears away landfill environment

Built to Last

Combining our material impact science with our sustainable additive ensures eco-friendly strength you can rely on.

Strong & Sturdy

Our cases stay strong in your hands, your handbag and on your desk.

Ready to Dispose

When you’re finished with your case, discard the product in your household waste to be taken to landfill.

Biodegradation Begins

Our cases only biodegrade in oxygen-starved landfill environments, leaving no trace of microplastics behind.

This enhanced plastic material breaks down into organic molecules, such as carbon dioxide and methane, when they’re being digested by microorganisms in deoxygenated landfill environments. They leave behind no toxic residue, microplastics or chemical traces, making them totally safe for the earth.

We are utilising this enhanced biomaterial in all our cases moving forwards.

Reduce & Recycle

On top of these technologies, from our fully recycled packaging to our latest sustainable range featuring 100% recycled and fully biodegradable* impact-proof cases, we are focused more than ever on improving the way we work. And when it comes to our manufacturing process, our Science & Engineering teams are working with The National Physical Laboratory to develop industry-revolutionising tooling machines in order to massively reduce our waste and CO2 emissions. Tech21 is heading for a much greener, more sustainable future.

*These cases feature our in-house Waste Responsible Innovation technology that will biodegrade** in landfill environments in a matter of just a few years. Our materials have been independently tested by Eden Research Laboratory, Albuquerque, USA.

This product is not considered biodegradable in some parts of the world, including California, Maryland, Washington & France

**Actual biodegradation rates will vary in biologically active landfills according to the type of plastic used, the product configuration, and the solid content, temperature and moisture levels of the landfill.
